Have you ever seen a fence made out of surfboards? Meet Donald “DJ” Dettloff, a surfer in Maui, who has built this really awesome surfboard fence. If you happen to be in Maui, you’ve probably already heard of it; you can find it on Kaupakalua Road.

The first assumption is that DJ actually owned and rode all these surfboards but he admits the truth is that once he started building the fence, surfers started bringing him old boards to add to it. More proof that if you build it, they will come. DJ says he first started finding surfboards by shopping at the local dump, but that’s no longer allowed. “I’d go [to the dump] every weekend,” he says. The longer the fence got, the more attention it received from the local surfing community. DJ says the fence really began to grow when some local windsurfers started bringing their very large boards to be added to the fence. He says, “Once the windsurfers started coming, this thing just blew up.”

A storm in 2002 almost obliterated the surfboard fence, causing DJ to begin using a two-row design; one row is very large boards and the second row is short boards. This design allows the wind to blow through the fence rather than knock it down. The fence currently has about 650 surfboards.

You can find out a lot more about DJ’s surfboard fence on his website at Maui Surfboard Fence.
