Surfing’s Best Kept Secret

Last year Surfer Magazine named their choices for the top 10 US surf towns. Here they are, and as you can see, South Padre, Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, and Galveston are still US surfing’s best kept secrets. I saw the founder of Quicksilver by Bob Hall one time; even the insiders are keeping their lips sealed about the 8-12 foot waves, beach privacy, and warm water on the Texas gulf.

TOP 10 US SURF TOWNS:

1. Santa Cruz, CA
2. Haleiwa, HI
3. Encinitas, CA
4. Paia, HI
5. San Clemente, CA
6. Kill Devil Hills, NC
7. Malibu, CA
8. Montauk, NY
9. New Smyrna Beach, FL
10. Ocean City, NJ

red tide algae Red Tide Serving Up Free Dinner at Corpus Beaches!

I don’t think you should actually eat fish that have been poisoned by algae, but the beaches have shored up quite a few dead fish recently, due to red tide. Red tide is an overabundance of a type of algae, which kills fish and fills the air; some surfers have complained in recent weeks of this stuff stinging their eyes.

Fun in Corpus Christi

Bob Hall Pier

If you haven’t been in the water yet today, you really should go. It’s a lot of fun, great for surfing, body surfing, boogie boarding, whatever. The waves are really well formed and peeling nicely. The water is 84f  and be sure to wear sun stuffs because it’s really sunny.

It couldn’t possibly be a better day to go to the beach.

Texas Tanker Surfing

You’ve probably heard of Texans surfing waves created by tanker ships on the Gulf of Mexico. It was mentioned in the surf documentary, Step into Liquid.

The guys in this video surf a head-high tanker wave for 16 minutes.

Surf Cam at Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas

Thanks to The Dunes Condos in Port Aransas, we now host the web cam that looks out over the water at Horace Caldwell Pier. You can always find the surf cam here. By the way, if the Bob Hall cam was working, its view would look almost identical to the Port A cam.

Corpus Christi Surf

Today is a lot of fun. A lot of it is disorganized but you can find some places that are lined up nice, and the parking is a lot better, at least at Bob Hall. The rest of the beach is still very flooded; I parked on an access road and had a blast in the water, so even if the flooding turns you off, just trudge through it and go surf.
