    The Indespensible Surf Leash Tie

Ever snapped a surf leash tie? You come up after a wipe out on a day when the sea is angry, and even though you're wearing a leash, your board has shot across the water because the leash tie snapped. If the tide is up your board probably heads to shore, so you chase it down. And now you have a problem: Where do I get a new leash tie? And your brain answers back,

Now Buy Individual Leash Ties in a Variety of Colors

So you go to your favorite surf shop and what do you find? They tell you that to get a new leash tie you have to either buy a new leash (way too expensive for this little rope) or buy a pair of baggies that come with a complimentary leash tie. Either way you’re looking at spending $20-50 just to get this leash tie. And that’s all fine and dandy for surf companies, but what about us? We just need a freakin’ leash tie and we’re not rich!

Last time I needed a leash tie, the guy at the surf shop basically stole one out of a pair of baggies and sold it to me for $2.50. There are two problems with this. First off, what about the person who buys those baggies and doesn’t get the leash tie they expect? Also, $2.50 is a lot to pay for that little rope!

One other problem I have with leash tie’s is that there’s no variety. They’re always black! What if I want a red or a blue one? Why isn’t anyone addressing this problem? I want to go to a surf shop and buy 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 surf leash ties at a decent price and even pick out the colors I like.

    And now we can.

I’m introducing surf leash ties in a variety of colors, at a great price: 4 leash ties for $5. That’s only $1.25 each, and these things are even tested for 400 pounds of pressure, so you can count on them to hang on to your surfboard.

When they sell out, I’ll buy other colors, like orange, maybe some camouflage, and whatever else you tell me you’d like to see.

New Book! Surfing Corpus Christi & Port Aransas

"Surfing Corpus Christi and Port Aransas" is a new book written by locals Dan Parker and Michelle Christenson, with the help of the Texas Surf Museum. It basically walks you through the history of surfing from way back in the 1950's, up through today.

This book is full of photos of the first surf shops, first surfers, first everything. For example, check out this picture of Benjamin’s from when it was still located on Padre Island in 1979 (click it to make it larger).

Here’s an old photo (look at how the people are dressed at the beach) of Bob Hall Pier in 1962.

This picture reminded me that people have been surfing at my favorite spots since before I was even born. It’s interesting to see what was going on at these spots before I was ever even thought of. Surf spots become “ours,” like we own them because we’re the ones who are out there surfing them all the time, but they were owned long ago; we’re not the first or the last.

Million Dollars Surf Spot in Corpus Christi, 1974:

million dollars surf spot 300x171 New Book! Surfing Corpus Christi & Port Aransas

This book is a must-have if you surf in Corpus Christi or Port Aransas because it’s the story of our life style. You’ll better understand the culture you’re dedicating your life to. Pretty much every page of this book has a photo that says a million things about the history of Texas surf. There are also stories about surfers, surf shops, and storms. There are a lot of pictures of storm surfing, competitions, board makers, you name it. I found a picture of a guy in there that I’ve been surfing along side for several years, and found out he’s been a major player in the South Texas surf culture for his whole life. Before I opened the book, he was just another guy in the lineup.

This book is sure to open your eyes to the fact that surfing in Texas is greater than our lives at the beach. It’s good to feel the connection between us and the past, and to realize we are now part of the story that future surfers will be looking back on.

The book comes out Monday, May 24 and can be purchased at the Texas Surf Museum or by going to this website: www.arcadiapublishing.com.

Here’s a flier that will tell you even more. Please click on the picture to make it large enough to easily read it. And if you get the book, come back here and put a comment telling everyone what pictures and stories you found in it that really interested you.

Carry a Surfboard on Your Bicycle

With this contraption you can carry your surfboard on your bicycle. These pictures were taken recently in Galveston, Texas. Surf shops in the area have these; I’ve seen them at Surf Specialties and I’m pretty sure the others will have them too.

Why You Should Buy Used Surfboards

    • You’ll save hundreds of dollars if you buy used surfboards.
    • Brand new surfboards cost a lot of money. A new Rusty shortboard can cost you over $800 easily, and longboards often are priced at over $1,000. Used boards are generally under $400, with many decent boards for first-timers running $250 or less.
    • You help out a fellow surfer when you buy their surfboard.
    • The surfboard gets to go to a good home (a surfer’s home where it’ll be loved and played with, not stuck on a wall for looks).
    • When you ding the used board, it’s not as big a deal as it would be if the board was brand new. If you buy your boards new, a major ding or crack can cost you $800 (the price of a new board) versus a couple hundred. And even if the ding is small, the emotional damage is much less if the board is used rather than brand new. It’s similar to getting a scratch on a used car and getting a scratch on a new car.
    • You can have more surfboards because you spend less on them. Imagine the variety of surfboards you could be surfing with! An $800 board could have been 3 used  boards.
    • Used surfboards usually come with a traction pad, a leash, and cool stickers.
    • You get to meet a fellow surfer during the transaction, someone you might end up paddling out with.
    • Buying a used surfboard is the best way to learn how to surf at the lowest cost.
    • It’s easy to find used  boards.
    • It’s easy to sell used  boards when it’s time to get another board. And the same money you sell it with is all you’ll need to get another used surfboard.
